- Ranil Wickramasinghe had been the leader of the UNP since 1994.
- Under his leadership the UNP had lost 14 elections.
- Ranil Wickramasinghe has presided over all these defeats.
- How has he managed to be the leader of the UNP for so long?
He changed the constitution of the UNP in 1995 in relation to election of the leader
- The Party Constitution of 1982 provided for the Leader to be elected by the National Executive Committee except when the President of the country is a member of the Party when he shall be designated the Leader.
2001 elections UNP received 46% of the votes. (SLFP 36% , JVP 8%)
- 2004 election UNP received 37%. SLFP, JVP combine received only 45% of the votes. This is a clear indication that the UNP lost due to the incompetence of the leadership.

POLITICS: The stark contrast between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Leader of the Opposition, is that Mahinda attracts people and forces right across the political spectrum whereas Ranil repels even his own allies. Put another way, Ranil's capacity to drive people away from him is as great as Mahinda's capacity to bring them into his fold. |

A powerful faction within the UNP parliamentary group are to press the party leadership to restore political stability in the country by supporting the Government in parliament in implementing constitutional reform. In what may be a breakthrough in the present political impasse, this group of influential UNPers are proposing conditional support to sustain the PA Government but minus any pressure for a share of Cabinet portfolios that had characterised previous UNP demands for a 'national government'. |
